Is Your Investment-Linked Life Policy's Unit Portion Protected by PIDM?

Not every benefit is protected. PIDM's Takaful and Insurance Benefits Protection System (TIPS) excludes maturity, surrender and income benefits payable from an investment-linked policy's unit portion. But an eligible death benefit payable from that portion can be protected, subject to limits and your contract. Check the benefit, not just the insurer's membership sign.
decision checklist
Check the benefit before relying on PIDM
- Identify the payment: maturity means the policy reaches its contractual end; surrender means giving it up early. Ask the insurer which benefit category your proposed payment falls into.
- Identify the source: ask whether the maturity, surrender or income payment comes from the unit portion. Those unit-portion benefits are excluded from TIPS.
- Check eligibility: the policy must be issued in Malaysia by an insurer member, reported by that insurer to Bank Negara Malaysia as a Malaysian policy, and denominated in ringgit.
- Do not write off every unit-related benefit: PIDM says misfortune benefits, such as death benefits, payable from the unit portion are protected, subject to applicable limits and policy terms.
- Keep a document pack: policy wording, benefit schedule, latest statement and the insurer's written explanation. This is a suggested checking aid, not a prescribed PIDM application.
Why this matters
Why this matters: you may be comparing a policy's insurance cover with money you expect to receive when you give up the policy or when it reaches its end. Treating every payment as the same kind of protected benefit can lead to a mistaken decision. This guide concerns investment-linked life policies, not a particular insurer or a real claim.
TIPS protects eligible insurance benefits if an insurer member fails and cannot honour them. It is not an extra insurance policy you buy from PIDM. Protection is automatic for eligible benefits; you do not apply or register for it. That still leaves a separate question: is the particular benefit you are relying on included?
What the law says
What the law says: regulation 3(3) of the Malaysia Deposit Insurance Corporation (Protected Benefits) Regulations 2020 excludes maturity and related benefits, surrender and related benefits, and income payable from the unit portion of an investment-linked policy. In everyday terms, maturity is the policy reaching its contractual end, while surrender is giving it up before then. Ask the insurer to identify the contractual category rather than relying on a sales label such as savings.
The exclusion is specific. It is not a rule that every benefit under an investment-linked policy is unprotected. PIDM's FAQ expressly says misfortune benefits, such as death benefits, payable from the unit portion are protected under TIPS. Any actual claim remains subject to the policy's conditions and limits, as well as the applicable TIPS protection limit. This guide does not calculate a payout.
Eligibility comes first. Regulation 3(2) requires the policy to be issued in Malaysia by an insurer member, reported by that insurer to Bank Negara Malaysia as a Malaysian policy, and denominated in ringgit. Ask the insurer to confirm all three; do not assume that a Malaysian sales conversation establishes them. PIDM's current FAQ and training materials continue to describe the unit-benefit exclusion. The 2020 Regulations commenced on 1 January 2021 and revoked the 2011 Regulations.
There is also a practical disclosure route. Under PIDM's information guidelines, effective from 1 June 2024, an insurer member and its agents must explain TIPS coverage and protected-benefit limits at the point of a face-to-face sale. For online sales, they must display the relevant protection statement and provide a link to the TIPS brochure or PIDM information. Use that information to ask a product-specific question, rather than stopping at a membership logo.
How does this impact me?
Hypothetical — considering surrender: an adult policy owner asks about cashing out an investment-linked life policy. The insurer identifies the proposed payment as surrender benefits payable from the unit portion. Those benefits fall within the exclusion. This does not decide what the insurer owes under the policy; it answers the narrower PIDM-protection question.
Hypothetical — comparing benefits: an adult is reviewing a policy with both a unit-portion surrender benefit and a death benefit. The surrender exclusion does not, by itself, make the death benefit unprotected. Ask the insurer to identify each benefit separately and confirm eligibility and limits. Neither example predicts an individual's claim outcome or describes a real event.
Key lessons
Key lessons: separate the insurer's membership, the policy's eligibility and the benefit's protection status. They are different checks. A unit-related payment is not automatically excluded, and an insurer's membership does not make an excluded payment protected. Our suggested document pack and questions follow those distinctions; they are practical guidance, not a compulsory filing procedure.
Bottom line
Bottom line: for an investment-linked life policy, ask what benefit is payable and whether it comes from the unit portion. Unit-portion maturity, surrender and income benefits are excluded from TIPS. Other eligible benefits can be protected within the applicable limits. Get the distinction explained before making a surrender or purchase decision.
Detailed steps
- Collect the policy wording, benefit schedule and latest statement. Highlight the particular payment you are asking about; keep the insurer's reply with those documents.
- Suggested wording: Please identify whether this payment is maturity, surrender, income or another benefit, whether it is payable from the unit portion, and whether it is protected under TIPS. This is an authored sample, not an official form.
- Ask the insurer to confirm issuance in Malaysia, ringgit denomination and reporting to Bank Negara Malaysia as a Malaysian policy. Also ask which protection limit and policy conditions apply.
- Read the linked PIDM FAQ and ask your insurer for its TIPS explanation. Before cancelling or surrendering, obtain advice on your actual policy rather than treating this guide as a recommendation to exit it.
FAQ
Does PIDM membership protect the whole policy?
No. The policy must satisfy the eligibility conditions, and the particular benefit must be protected. Maturity, surrender and income benefits payable from the unit portion are specifically excluded.
Are death benefits from the unit portion excluded too?
Not simply because they come from that portion. PIDM says misfortune benefits, such as death benefits, payable from the unit portion are protected. Eligibility, applicable protection limits and the policy's conditions still matter.
Must I register separately for TIPS?
No. PIDM says protection for eligible benefits is automatic and does not require an application or registration. Automatic protection does not remove the exclusions.
Should I surrender my policy because of the exclusion?
This guide cannot make that decision for you. It explains PIDM protection, not whether keeping or surrendering your particular policy is financially suitable. First obtain the benefit breakdown and advice about your actual contract.

This guide explains the unit-portion benefit exclusion for investment-linked life policies, checked on 11 October 2026. It is not a surrender recommendation, a valuation or confirmation that your policy or claim is eligible. Contract terms and applicable protection limits still matter. Ask your insurer for a benefit-specific explanation and obtain individual advice before changing cover.
