Bought It Through Your Bank: Is the Product Actually Protected by PIDM?

No. A bank's membership in PIDM does not make everything it sells an insured deposit. Eligible deposits have protection against member-bank failure, subject to limits; unit trusts, shares and gold-related investment products or accounts do not have deposit insurance. Check the exact product's status before moving savings into it.
Document checklist
Before you move savings into another bank product
- Identify the exact product and the institution offering it. Separate the bank's PIDM membership sign from the product's own protection statement.
- If it is offered as a deposit, ask whether it appears on the bank's list of insured deposits. Request the latest list; the disclosure guidelines require a copy on request at no charge.
- Look for the deposit statement: 'Protected by PIDM up to RM250,000 for each depositor' or 'Not protected by PIDM'. Read which product the statement actually describes.
- For a unit trust, shares or a gold-related investment product or account, do not treat the bank's sales channel as deposit protection. Ask for the product documents before agreeing.
- Keep the advertisement, product terms, statement and any written explanation together. These are a practical record of what you were offered, not a guarantee of reimbursement.
Why this matters
Why this matters: you may meet the same bank employee, use the same app and pay from the same savings account when buying very different financial products. Those surroundings can make the products feel equally protected. The useful question is not simply 'Is my bank a PIDM member?' It is 'Is this exact product an insured deposit?'
This is an evergreen product-checking guide, not a report of a bank failure. PIDM's Deposit Insurance System protects eligible deposits against loss in the event of a member bank's failure. It is not a blanket promise about everything a bank markets. Keep that distinction in mind before moving money you regard as savings into an investment.
What the law says
What the rules say: PIDM's Guidelines on Deposit Insurance Coverage for Deposits set out the criteria it applies to insured deposits. They include whether the money constitutes a conventional or Islamic deposit, is received in the bank's usual deposit-taking business, is repayable in money and is a deposit liability or reported as a deposit accepted. The person entitled to repayment must also be identifiable from the contract. A reassuring product name alone does not answer those questions.
PIDM's current public FAQ lists savings and current accounts, fixed deposits and Islamic deposit accounts among eligible deposit types. It expressly says unit trusts, stocks and shares, and gold-related investment products or accounts are not protected by deposit insurance. This guide concerns deposit insurance, not the separate protection rules for insurance or takaful benefits.
The bank must distinguish membership from product status. Under paragraph 7.1 of PIDM's information guidelines, a bank discloses an insured deposit using the prescribed protection statement, or an uninsured deposit using the prescribed non-protection statement. Paragraph 6.11 requires the latest list of insured deposits to be supplied on request at no charge. These are useful documents to ask for, not just background notices to walk past.
Read the statement in context. For an advertisement containing both deposits and non-deposit products, paragraph 8.5 applies the deposit statements to the deposits; it does not require a statement for each non-deposit product. Paragraph 10.2 makes a similar distinction for instruments such as account statements. The absence of a non-protection label next to an investment therefore does not establish that it is protected.
Even an eligible deposit is subject to a ceiling. PIDM states RM250,000 per depositor per member bank, including principal and interest or return, with separate limits for conventional and Islamic deposits. Its December 2024 guidelines also explain aggregation of eligible accounts. Do not read a product's protection statement as a separate RM250,000 promise for every ordinary savings or fixed-deposit account.
There is a specific older-product exception worth preserving. The coverage guidelines exclude investments linked to derivatives but retain protection for those previously specified as insured before 22 February 2022, until maturity, full withdrawal or other termination, whichever happens first. The December 2024 guidelines repeat this transitional rule. If an older structured product is involved, obtain its actual status and history rather than applying a blanket 'all investments are uninsured' slogan.
How does this impact me?
Hypothetical scenario: you see an advertisement offering a fixed deposit alongside a unit trust. The deposit has a PIDM protection statement, and the page also carries the bank's membership sign. That statement does not turn the unit trust into an insured deposit. Before accepting the investment, ask which wording applies to which product and keep the advertisement with the final terms.
Hypothetical scenario: your bank statement lists both a savings account and a gold-related investment account. A deposit protection statement elsewhere on the statement is not enough to establish protection for the gold account. PIDM's FAQ expressly excludes gold-related investment products or accounts. As practical guidance, request a written product-specific explanation rather than drawing conclusions from the shared statement layout.
Key lessons
The lesson is to match the evidence to the product. Membership identifies the institution; the insured-deposit list and relevant statement identify deposit status; the contract identifies what you bought. Keeping those documents together is sensible preparation if descriptions conflict. It does not decide a complaint or make an otherwise uninsured product eligible.
A second lesson is to separate eligibility from amount. First establish whether the product belongs within deposit insurance. Only then consider the applicable ceiling and aggregation rules. An attractive return, a familiar bank logo or a product sold by bank staff cannot replace that first check.
Bottom line
Bottom line: do not assume 'sold by my bank' means 'protected by PIDM'. Check the exact product, obtain the relevant list and statement, and preserve the documents before moving savings. Unit trusts, shares and gold-related investment products are not insured deposits; older derivative-linked products need their specific transitional status checked.
Detailed steps
- Ask the bank: 'Is this exact product an insured deposit? Please identify its entry on your latest insured-deposit list, or explain in writing why it is not on that list.' This is suggested wording, not an official form.
- Save the product advertisement, disclosure documents, contract and account statement. Note which protection statement applies to the deposit and which items are non-deposit products.
- If the documents and sales explanation conflict, pause the proposed transfer and ask the bank to clarify. As practical guidance, keep a dated record of the question and reply.
- For uncertainty about deposit protection, use PIDM's official website to obtain clarification and recheck its current contact details. Do not treat a bank employee's informal assurance as a substitute for the product's status.
FAQ
Does PIDM membership protect every product a bank sells?
No. Membership and product eligibility are different. PIDM's Deposit Insurance System covers eligible deposits against member-bank failure, not every investment sold through the bank. Its FAQ specifically excludes unit trusts, stocks and shares, and gold-related investment products or accounts.
What should I ask for when checking a deposit?
Ask for the exact product's insurability statement and the bank's latest list of insured deposits. Paragraph 6.11 of PIDM's information guidelines requires a copy of the latest list on request at no charge. Keep the relevant documents together as a practical record.
Does a missing 'Not protected' label prove protection?
No. The information guidelines do not require an insurability statement for every non-deposit product in a mixed advertisement or statement. Check the product itself. Do not infer coverage from silence, a nearby deposit's statement or the bank's membership sign.
Must I register or pay to insure an eligible deposit?
No. PIDM's public FAQ says deposit insurance protection is automatic for eligible deposits placed with member banks, free, and requires no application or registration. Automatic protection still depends on eligibility and the applicable limits.

This guide addresses PIDM deposit eligibility and product disclosures in Malaysia, using official material inspected on 7 October 2026. It is not investment advice or a decision that a particular product qualifies. Insurance and takaful benefits have separate rules; older derivative-linked products may have transitional protection.
